Equities and Economics Report writer Victor Gonçalves, in this exclusive interview, says the yellow metal is in its typical summer lull and will generally see more strength than weakness this year. He’s enthusiastic about some undervalued juniors, saying good management is what makes or breaks these companies.

The Gold Report: The price of gold has dipped to below $1,175 this morning; do you see this as a sign that the general economy is improving and that inflation is not on the horizon? Or perhaps it’s …

The Nikkei was trading -1.64% lower on a combo of weaker data emerging from Japan earlier in the morning. Data showed that the Japanese jobless rate was a tick higher than…

EUR/USD Still Hovering Around 3-Month High

After hitting a three month high against the U.S. dollar in trading yesterday, the euro took some slight losses last night, falling some 30 pips against the greenback. The overall trend for EUR/USD is still up, especially ahead of the U.S. Advance GDP figure, which is forecasted to show a slight decrease from the previous report.

Want some indication of the strength of corporate America?  Take a look at two separate, but related numbers: 1) the ‘beat rate’ on Revenues (or what many refer to as ‘top-line’ earnings) vs. 2) the ‘beat rate’ on earnings per se (EPS or profits).

Here’s the former:

What does it mean?  Essentially, that about 50% of the time, corporate America is falling short of Wall Street’s expectations in terms of overall sales.  Whether that sheds more light on corporate America or Wall Street’s analysts is an open question.  But taken together with …

With the boom in global demand for alternative-fueled vehicles, now may be a good time to break out your Periodic Table of Elements from science class.  It’s time to learn something about lithium.

Represented by the symbol “Li,” lithium is the lightest and least dense of the solid elements. Lithium production has been growing for decades thanks to its use in small batteries.  Powering a car with electricity takes more than a few AAA cells, but it can be done.  The idea is increasingly popular …

To start the news day, Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) has recently announced through a press release that they will be providing $10 million in grants to non-profit lenders over the next year.  This grant, it is hoped, will help these non-profit lenders by providing collateral for more funds from US small business departments, such as the Small Business Association and the Department of Agriculture.  To access loans from these small business programs, non-profit lenders must set aside loan loss reserves of up to 15%.  The SBA and USDA then provide …

The Yen extended its strength through the Asian session this morning and was higher against most of the majors on a combination of weaker macroeconomic data and selloffs in the equity sector. Starting with the release of the durable goods orders (-1.0% act v 1.0% exp/-0.8% prev) and continuing through to the release of the Fed’s beige book, it was all about weakening sentiment during last night’s…

UBS AG (NYSE:UBS) was a big winner yesterday, on an otherwise neutral market day.  Pushing up the European bank was news that their regulatory hiccups in America would soon be over due to newly pledged cooperation with the US Internal Revenue Service.  And, obviously, huge second quarter profits didn’t hurt the stock either: The Swiss bank announced a 2 billion franc profit for the second quarter ($1.9 billion US dollars), after losing approximately 1.4 billion francs earlier in the year.  The stock ended yesterday at 16.50, a jump from the …
